From Where Does The Surname Originate? meaning and history
An old surname on the east coast from Berwick to East Lothian. Jordanus Brac gave a piece of land to the church of S. Mary and S. Kentigern of Lanark c. 1214 (Dryburgh, p. 156). This land was afterwards known as Braxfield, and gave title to the notorious Lord Braxfield, one of the Judges of the Court of Session. In the reign of Robert I Michael Hart had a charter of the lands of Brakysfield which Ade Braks resigned (RMS., I, App. II, 603; OPS., I, p. 121 errs in placing this grant in the reign of William the Lion). In 1511 William Brax and his son, David Brax, had a lease of an eighth part of the Grange of Connan (RAA., II, p. 405), and John Brak is in record in 1522 (Horne, 46). Thomas Brack in Mandirstoune, 1673, and four others of the name are in record (Lauder). Thomas Brack in Heittoun, 1690 (Peebles CR.) William Brack, portioner of Smaillholme, 1769, and Nicol Brack, millwright in Newtown, 1815 (Heirs, 330,623).
