Of local origin from the lands and later village of the same name in Avondale parish, Lanarkshire. John de Bradwod was one of the jurors on an inquest held in St. Katherine's Chapel, Bavelay, in 1280 (Bain, IV, 1762). John Braidwod or Braidwoth and Patrick Braidwot are recorded in 1498 as inhabitants of Vddynston (REG., 478,479), and Cristine Braydwoyd was tenant in the barony of Glasgow in 1521 (Rental). James Braidwood, surgeon, burgess of Glasgow, appears in 1649 (Inquis., 3553). The name also occurs in the Glasgow protocol books as Braidwode (1553) and Braidwod (1550). The founder of the firm of Messrs. Broadwood piano manufacturers, was born in Cockburnspath in 1732. Other early forms of the name are Breadwood and Braiduode.
