Surnames of the United Kingdom (1912) by Henry Harrison

User-submitted Reference

The Bramhill surname is most probably from the Bramall Hall estate south of Manchester. Bramalls and variants moved into Lancashire and Yorkshire in the 14/15th centuries (in the 1600s John Bramall of Pontefract successfully applied for arms quoting descent from the "ancient Bramall family of Cheshire"}. Some Bramhills emigrated to North America via the West Indies, while others wend direct from the UK. There appears to be a close paternal DNA connection with Carringtons, and Carrington was a neighbouring manor house. There may also be a DNA connection with Ryall/Royal.
