Gaelic and Old Irish bran, 'raven.' W. bran., 'orow'. A common element in personal and river names. Seven or eight persons named Bran occur in the Breton chartularies, besides diminutives and compounds. Bran was the name of the famous hound of Finn. Bran, son of Aidan was slain in the battle of Circhend (fought probably in the Meams), c. 598 (Anderson, ES., I, p. 118). Bran, son of Macgillegunnin witnessed the confirmation charter by Christian, bishop of Galloway, of the church of S. Marie and S. Bruoc, of Dunrod to Holyrood between 1154 and 1186 (LSC., p. 20), and Donecan, son of Bran witnessed Earl Gilbert's confirmation of his grants to the Abbey of Inchaffray in 1219 (Inchaffray, p. 34). William Bran at the mill of Carnwath was charged with assault, 1629 (RPC,, 2. ser. III, p. 209).
