BRANCHELL: Probably from Brarchal near Wishaw, Lanarkshire. There is another Branchal near Bridge of Weir, Renfrewshire. Robert Branchall occupied the twenty merk land of Finnart, 1580 (Laing, 1004). James Branchell, burgess of Dumbarton, 1758 (RDB.)."Branchall Sacrament" was the name given to "the sacrament of the Lord's Supper held by Seceders from the Church of Scotland at Burntshiels in the parish of Kilbarchan about the beginning of the nineteenth century. 'Branchall' is one of the forms of Bryntschelis" (Metcalfe-Jamieson, Scottish dictionary, s.v. Branchall). The lands of Bruntchells, the seat, of old times, of Bruntchells of that Ilk, lie towards the south of Ranfurly. John Bruntchells, the last of that race, resigned the lands in favor of William, Lord Semple, 1547 (Craufurd, Shire of Renfrew, 1782, pt. II, p. 141).
