James Brander in Urquhart signed the Test, 1685 (RPC., 3. ser. X, p. 417). William Brander, member of Huntly Company of Volunteers, 1805 (Will, p. 30). Said to be from the occupation-the man who branded the (fish) barrels. The "brand of Aberdeen" passed current through Europe in the fifteenth century. (2) It may also have originated from the trade of brander or grid-iron smith, "a trade which centuries ago was as close a corporation as any to-day.".
