Bravi Surname Meaning
User-submitted Reference
All the Italian surnames ending with -in are actually related to the Republic of Venice and its territories. Specifically, the surname Bravin was originated in the hamlet of Polcenigo, in the region of Friuli, but historically related to Venice. This is why this surname sounds Venetian more than Friulian, as Polcenigo is just on the linguistic border between Venetian and Friulian languages. All the Italian surnames that are variants of "Bravo" have probably the same original meaning: since the late Middle Age, a "bravo" was a mercenary, a sellsword, just like the "bravos" depicted in the "Promessi Sposi" novel written by Alessandro Manzoni. The Italian word "bravo" is from Latin "pravus" whose original meaning was "bad, tough" and later in the middle ages took the new meaning of "bold, brave" (and yes, the English word "brave" has the same origin), that was used in particular for soldiers, warriors and sellswords.
