People of this name are mainly found in or near Co. Roscommon and most of these can with reasonable certainty be regarded as belonging to the sept of Ó Braoin, the principal family of which were erenaghs of St. Coman, Roscommon. (The other Ó Braoin septs are called Breen — see Irish Families, p. 59). It was a coincidence that an English Cromwellian, James Bruen, settled at Abbeyboyle, Co.

Roscommon, in the seventeenth century. His family did not long remain there: in the next century they moved to Co. Carlow and acquired there a very extensive family property-de Burgh's Landowners of Ireland (1878) states that it consisted of 16,477 acres in Co. Carlow and 6932 in Co. Wexford.

Dictionary of American Family Names (1956) by Elsdon Coles Smith

When in 1607 Hugh O'Neill, earl of Tyrone, went into voluntary exile, the government of James I. wished to displace his adherents from Ulster, in order to introduce an English colony there. One of the seven native septs thus dispossessed were banished to the distant county of Kerry, where, to avoid persecution, they dropped the unpopular name of O'Neill, and adopted instead that of Breen, from Braon O'Neill, the head of their branch. Inf. H. H. Breen, Esq.
