Breerton Surname Meaning
From Where Does The Surname Originate? meaning and history
BREERETOUNE: Most probably from Brereton in Yorkshire. Thomas Breeretoune (probably an Englishman) was factor for the earl of Dysart, 1702.
One of the great Cheshire families who can be proved to have existed at or near the time of the Conquest, and are yet unnoticed in Domesd. Ormerod. They came over with the Conqueror, in the train of Hugh Lupus, with Gilbert de Venables, to whom they were apparently related, and settled at Brereton, from which place the name was assumed as early as temp. William Rufus.
The very ancient and distinguished family of Brereton held the Brereton estates in the place of that name from the 13th to the 18th century (O.).
The Shropshire Breretons, who were represented in Oswestry in the reign of Elizabeth (O.), include an old family of position in the county: they are probably a branch of the Breretons of Cheshire, which is the home of the name.
