User-submitted Reference
This surname from Gaelic-Irish Ó Briain. The origin of this surname is problematic. We know that it means descendant of Brien, but what Brien means is a bit of a mystery, some sources say 'exalted', meaning 'powerful/important' or 'high-power', while others say 'hill', which could be correlated with 'lofty', meaning 'elevated'.
