A middle Scots form of Gaelic and Irish Brighid. From it comes the diminutive Bridie, and see also Bryde and MaCbride.
BRIDYSON: An Anglicizing of MaCbride, which see. John Bridison was member of an inquest on the lands of Dunmaglass in 1414 (Cawdor, p. 5), and a later John Bridyson or Brydison had a tack of part of Kethyk in 1467 (Cupar-Angus, I, p. 132,147).
May be the Anglo-Saxon brid, a bird; but is more probably the Gael. Mac-Bride, by the suppression of Mac. Brideson is an anglicized form of that name.
(Gaelic.) From Brighid, a hostage, pledge, or security. The son of Bridget. Cormac, Archbishop of Cashel, in his glossary, defines Brighid "fiery dart,"and that it was the name of the Muse who was believed to preside over poetry, in pagan times, in Ireland. Breochuidh, a term given to those virgins who kept the perpetual fire of Beil or Belas among the Druids and ancient Celts.
Contracted from Bridgetson, the Anglicised form of Mac Brighde. The original name was Mac Giolla Brighde, ‘Bridget’s Servant's Son', or Mael Brighde, 'Bridget’s Tonsured Servant, ’ St. Bridget, Abbess of Kildare, born about a.d, 450, was the most highly venerated of the Irish female saints, and, consequently, many were named after her.
