(English) The keeper of a bridge; dweller near a bridge.
From the remotest antiquity, the building of bridges was considered a pious and charitable deed, and hence the erection and custody of them was confided to the priesthood. The Roman pontifices or higher order of priests were so styled a ponte faciendo. In the middle ages chapels were commonly built either upon or at the approaches of bridges. In some places the reparations of a parish church and those of a bridge were paid for out of a common fund.
