(English) The keeper of a bridge; dweller near a bridge.

Dictionary of American Family Names (1956) by Elsdon Coles Smith

From the remotest antiquity, the building of bridges was considered a pious and charitable deed, and hence the erection and custody of them was confided to the priesthood. In some places the reparations of a parish church and those of a bridge were paid for out of a common fund.

One who attends a bridge; a builder of bridges.
