The Scots form of Bridge. Of local origin from residence near a bridge, in Latin documents rendered od pontem. Elena de Bryg held land 'in vico de le Grene,' Aberdeen, in 1382 (RMS., I, 682). Robert Brig had remission for slaughter of Thomas Dunwedy of that Ilk, 1504 (Trials. I, p. 40). Patrick Brig was wricht in Edinburgh, 1508 (EBR., 117), Robene Brig in the towne of Bowdene, 1567 (Kelso, p. 519), and Alexander Brig, constable of the parish of Kingsbarns, 1633 (RPC., 2. ser. V, p. 94). Four individuals named Brig were charged with deforcement in Langnewton, 1628 (RPC., 2. ser. II, p. 512), and Andrew Brig, rebel fugitive from justice, and John Brigg in record in Balhassie, 1684 (RPC., 3. ser. X, p. 239,246).
