From Where Does The Surname Originate? meaning and history
An Anglicized spelling of Bradfute, which see. Agnes Broadfoot in Glengarne, Dumfriesshire, 1638 (Dumfries). Broadfoott 1687.
BRADFUTE: Braidfoot, Broadfoot. Evidently of local origin from some lost place name formerly either in Ayrshire or Dumfriesshire. The opposite is Braidhead (Dumfriesshire). The name is almost identical in meaning with the Gaelic place name Bondriech, 'foot of hill place.' Marion Bradfute was the wife of Sir William Wallace. Robert Braidfut was vicar of Dunnyn, 1491 (REG., 460). Mr. William Bredfut was minister of Falkland, 1593 (St. Andrews), James Braidfoot, merchant in Edinburgh, 1611 (Edinb. Marr.), and James Bredfoot was retoured heir in lands in parish of Dunss, 1678 (Retours, Berwick, 397). The surname is common in Lanark Commissariot Record. There was an old Cumberland family of Braidfoot (see Cumberland and Westmorland Arnchaeological and Antiquarian Society Trans., new ser. XIII). Bradfut 1573, Bradfutt 1566, Breadfoot 1639; Braidfoot, Braidfutt, Breadfotte, Bredfute, Breydfut.
(Scottish) One who came from Bradfute (foot of hill place), a lost place name formerly either in Ayrshire or Dumfriesshire.
Perhaps from the personal peculiarity; but more likely local.
Most probably the same as Bradford; from Bradford, name of places in cos. Devon, Dorset, Lancaster, Northumberland, Somerset, Stafford, and York.
