In the letter of protection by King David I to the same clerics (c. 1150) he appears again among the witnesses as Brocin. The name is a diminutive of brocc, a badger, a common element in Gaelic personal names in inscriptions, both ogham and Roman, in southwestern Ireland and in western Britain.
