From Where Does The Surname Originate? meaning and history

Of territorial origin from the barony of the name in Moray. Michael de Brothie had a charter from Robert I in 1311 (not in RMS.) of the lands of Brodie as his father's heir. In 1337 there is mention of the "terra de Brothy domini" (ER., I, p. 441). Thomas de Brothy was juror at a court held at "Le Bailocis Hill" near Inverness 1376—7 (Family of Innes, p. 63). John de Brothy appears in 1380 as witness in a matter between the bishop of Moray and Alexander Stewart, lord of Badenoch (REM., p. 187). Although the family of Biodie have been "long located in the province of Moray, less is known of their history than of almost any other of similar antiquity. This has been accounted for by the fact that all their papers and charters were destroyed when Brodie House was burnt by Lord Lewis Gordon in 1645. It does not. however, explain entirely the almost entire want of information about them, and it may therefore be presumed that their estate was not large, nor were they much known as having taken a share in public affairs until the middle or close of the sixteenth century, when they somewhat suddenly take a prominent place in the county, and so continue down to our time" (Young, Parish of Spynie, Elgin, 1871, p. 328). Broadie 1690, Broddy 1622, Brodya 1546; also Brady, Bridy, Broddie, Brothu, Brydie.
