Of local origin from the old lands of Birkmyre in Dumfriesshire. Michael of Byrkmyr, a presbyter of the diocese of Glasgow, 1432 (Laing, 109), may be the Michael Birkmyr who witnessed an instrument of sasine in Dumfries in 1477 (Edgar, p. 237). John of Byrkmyr witnessed a discharge by John Stewart of Dernlie in 1452 (Pollok, I, p. 173), Alexander Byrkmyr witnessed an indenture in Glasgow in 1485 (LCD., p. 198), and Andrew Byrkmyr was decanus of Angus in 1517 (RAA., II, 544). In 1588 George Birkmyre appeared as cautioner at the Kirk of Inchynnane for John Stewart of Cassoquhy (RPC., IV, p. 335; Methven, p. 75). William Birkmyre was burgess freeman of Glasgow by purchase in 1612 (Burgesses), and William Birkmyre is recorded in Newabbey in 1774 (Dumfries).
BROKMYR: Local. Alexander Brokmyr was declared innocent of part in detention of King James in in Edinburgh Castle, 1482 (The Lennox, II, p. 123).
