This surname is derived from a geographical locality. 'of Broomhead,' 'an estate in Hallamshire, Yorkshire, which passed from the family through an heiress so early as temp. Richard II.' Courthope's Debrett, quoted by Lower (Patronymica Britannica.). This surname with several variants is still well known in the West Riding, and has come down through some junior or independent stock. Brummett and Bromet are very natural corruptions; compare Birkett for Birkhead, which see, or Beckett for Beckhead, which see. Broomhead means the topmost reach or 'head of the broom,' from residence thereby, just as Birkett means the topmost reach or 'head of the birch-trees'; compare Akenhead, which see. In the same way side was used (v. Garside and Akenside).

The Broomheads or Bromeheads resided at Bubnell Hall in Baslow in the 17th century, and there Robert Broomhead died in 1698 at the age of 60 (G.). Robert Broomhead of Bretton Clough, who died in 1764 at the age of 95, and was buried at Eyam (W.)., may or may not have been his son. Broomhead was a common name in Notts in the 17th century (Thoroton's "Notts"). Bromhead is an estate in Hallamshire in the West Riding.
