From the lands of Brothirstanys (now Brotherstone) in East Lothian, granted by Malcolm IV to the Hospital of Soutra (Soltre, p. 3). Those of the name residing around Gordon, Earlston, and Smailholm, may derive their surname from Brotherstones near St. Boswells. Between 1153 and 1177 Hugh de Brothirstane witnessed a grant by David Olifaid to the Hospital of Soltra (Soltre, p. 4), and a later Huwe de Britherstanes of the county of Berewyke rendered homage in 1296 (Bain, II, p. 206). Thomas Brotherstanis witnessed an instrument of sasine in 1493 (Laing, 217), John Brodyrstanis was tenant in the barony of Stobo in 1511 and James Biodirstane was also tenant there in 1537 (Rental). Janet Brotherstones appears in Lesuden in 1663 (RRM., II, p. 53), James Brotherstones was minister of Lesmahagow in 1672 (Fasti, II, p. 328), and Peter Brotherston of Penicuik was minister of Dysart 1816—1828 (ibid., II, p. 536,573). The surname is also found in the Edinburgh Marriage Register as early as 1612. The final s is dropped in some instances as in Gladstone.
