BROUNFIELD, Brownfield: Local. Gilbert Brunfeld was witness to a claim of a third part of Cranshaws, 1453 (Swinton, p. xxxix). John Brounfeild and Thomas Brounfeld of the Abbey of Melrose were witnesses in 1535 (RRM., I, p. XV), and Robert Brounfeild was servitor to Mr. John Home in 1610 (ibid., III, p. 378). Stephen Brounfeild made payment from rents of his lands of Grenelawdene in 1563 (ER., XIX, p. 231), and John Brounfeild was retoured heir in lands in Chirnside, 1606 (Retours, Berwick, 61). The seal of Andrew Brownfleld of Pittilseuch bears the legend S'Andree Brvnfild (Macdonald, 262). Alexander Brounfeild frater germanus quondam Jacobi Brounfeild de Nether Mains, 1609 (Inquis.
