Janet Brownebeard was an inmate of St. Thomas' Hospital, York, Feb. 6,' 553 (Corpus Christi Guild, Surt. Soc.). The sobriquet was clearly hereditary for a time.

BROWNBEARD: A byname. "Mihhyn brunberd aput corrukes" was one of the witnesses to the right marches of Stobbo, c. 1190 (REG., p. 89), and a payment was made to John, son of William Brunbert, a Galloway hostage, in 1300 (Bain, II,1179; Hist. Docs., II, p. 426). compare Blackbeard, Redbeard, and Smibert.
