Local. A common place name in CD. A payment was made to Ade de Brunhill in 1359 (ER., I, p. 608), probably the Ade de Bronhill, burgess of Edinburgh, recorded in 1368 (Egidii, p. 1). Adam Brownhill was member of Scots parliament for Edinburgh, 1367 (Hanna, II, p. 485). Ade de Brounhill or Bronhil held lands near Edinburgh in 1425—30 (Soltre, p. 294; RMS., II, 173). The surname was common in Edinburgh and neighborhood in the late fourteenth and fifteenth centuries as Brounhill, Brounhil, Bronhil, Bronhill, and Bronhyll (Egidii). William Brounhill witnessed a notarial transumpt in Angus, 1442 (Panmure, II, 233), and Andrew Brounhill was a notary public in Glasgow, 1512 (REG., 490). Magister Andrea Brounhill was a charter witness at Parbroyth, 1529 (RAA., II, p. 501). William Brounhill had a precept of remission in 1536 (RSS., II, 2033), Patrick Brownhill, friar of Glenluce, 1560 (Rusk, Parish and abbey of Glenluce, p. 135), and James Brounhill in Stenton took the oath in 1685 (RPC., 3. ser. X, p. 551).
