Willelmus Bronnyng in the parish of Fyvy was excommunicated in 1382 (REA., I, p. 165). James Brounin, burgess of Dundee, 1647 (Brechin), James Brouning in Spittal, parish of Stanehouse, 1667, and three more are recorded in Lanark Commissariot Record. John Buiening or Brunning in Galloway was hanged for being a Covenanter, 1682 (Hanna, II, p. 255,269). Old spellings are Brening, Brinyng, Brinenge, Brounyng, Bruning, Bruninge, and Brwninge.
