BROWNSIDE: From Brownside in the parish of Neilston, Renfrewshire. The surname was common in Glasgow in the sixteenth century. William Browynsyde held land in Glasgow in 1505 (LCD., p. 259), and George Brounnsyde or Brounnesyde, servitor to William Hegait, Glasgow, 1548—49 (Protocols, I), is in record again in 1570 as George Brovnside, apostolic notary (Pollok, I, p. 308). John Brounsyde of the monastery of Melrose was a witness in 1574 (RRM., III, p. 251), Hew Brownsyd, bonnetmaker, was admitted burgess of Glasgow as husband of a burgess's daughter in 1601, and Patrick Brownsyd was admitted burgess in 1617 (Burgesses). Brounesyide 1549, Brownesyde 1551, Brownesyide 1550, Brownsyde 1505.
