This is a variant form of Breen usual in Co.
Roscommon, the homeland of one of the Ó Braoin septs. SIF 25
People of this name are mainly found in or near Co. Roscommon and most of these can with reasonable certainty be regarded as belonging to the sept of Ó Braoin, the principal family of which were erenaghs of St. Coman, Roscommon. (The other Ó Braoin septs are called Breen — see Irish Families, p. 59). It was a coincidence that an English Cromwellian, James Bruen, settled at Abbeyboyle, Co.
Roscommon, in the seventeenth century. His family did not long remain there: in the next century they moved to Co. Carlow and acquired there a very extensive family property-de Burgh's Landowners of Ireland (1878) states that it consisted of 16,477 acres in Co. Carlow and 6932 in Co. Wexford.
