Though now rare in The Netherlands, it has survived in the corrupted form of [de] Brum, via a Dutch merchant from Maastricht, Wilhelm van der Bruyn, who settled on the Azores (Portugal). The Portuguese referred to him as Guilherme de Brum. A great many descendants made their way to the colonies of South America where the name has ramified strongly.
