From the Old English personal name Bruning, 'son of Brun.' John Brwnyng was one of the "burgenses rure manentes" of Aberdeen, 1317 (SCM., V, p. 11), and Sir John Browning was sheriff there in 1328 (ER., I, p. clxxxi, 107). Willelmus Bronnyng in the parish of Fyvy was excommunicated in 1382 (REA., I, p. 165). James Brounin, burgess of Dundee, 1647 (Brechin), James Brouning in Spittal, parish of Stanehouse, 1667, and three more are recorded in Lanark Commissariot Record. John Buiening or Brunning in Galloway was hanged for being a Covenanter, 1682 (Hanna, II, p. 255,269). Old spellings are Brening, Brinyng, Brinenge, Brounyng, Bruning, Bruninge, and Brwninge.
