BRYDE, Brydie, Bridie: Dovenald Bryd, burgess of Perth, rendered homage, 1296 (Bain, II, p. 197). Malcolm Bridy was a monk of Arbroath, 1451, prior of Fyvie, 1453, and abbot of Arbroath from 1456 to 1470 (RAA., 11, 92,100, and pref. p. x), James Bridy was perpetual vicar of Ennirkelor, 1464 (ibid., 153). William Bridy or Bride was presbyter of St. Andrews diocese, 1508 (REB., II, 161,162), and another William Bride or Bryde was grieve at Mains of Clunie, 1513 (Rent. Dunk., p. 182,186). Malcolm Bridye was servant to the bishop of Dunkeld, 1511 (ibid., p. 115), and Thomas Bryde was witness at Lochlevyn, 1546 (Rollok, 3). Andrew Brydie appears in Newburgh, 1635 (RPC., 2. ser. V, p. 505). John Bryde, dean of guild of St. Andrews, d. 1636, and his daughter, described as "Onna Briddie, daughter of John Briddie," died in 1648 (PSAS., LXX, p. 72, 77). Rachel Bryd was married in Edinburgh, 1667 (Edinb. Marr.), William Brydie, portioner of Dungartliill, had sasine of part of Dulbethie in 1674 (DPD., I, p. 262), and Alexander Brydie was shipmaster in Peterhead, 1753 (CRA.). Brydie is an old surname in the parish of Lochwinnoch, and in modern times the spelling has been changed to Brodie (Tannahill, Poems, note by the editor, David Semple, p. 271), and Breadie and Broddie are given as variants of the name in DPD. The name is also recorded in the Commissariot Record of Dunkeld and Muthill.
