This surname is derived from a nickname. 'the buck.' Two Johns in the village of Linford, Oxfordshire, are set down as John Giffard le Bok and John Giffard le Hof (Placita de Quo Warranto, Edward I.). No doubt both were sons of one Giffard, both being baptized by the same name, as was then common. The nicknames were added to secure identity (v. my Curiosities of Puritan Nomenclature, where records of even three Johns in a family are quoted).
