This surname is derived from a nickname. 'the buck.' Two Johns in the village of Linford, Oxfordshire, are set down as John Giffard le Bok and John Giffard le Hof (Placita de Quo Warranto, Edward I.). No doubt both were sons of one Giffard, both being baptized by the same name, as was then common. Alexander Buk was admitted burgess of Aberdeen, 1506, and Duncan Buk in 1560 (NSCM., I, p. 43, 67). Andrew Buk was skipper of the 'Nicolace' of Aberdeen, 1540 (CRA., p. 173), and Andro Buck was burgess there, 1591 (SCM., III, p. 156). Alexander Bucke in Auchorties, 1658 (Brechin), and Job Buck was shipmaster in Eyemouth, 1753 (Lauder).
