An Etymological Dictionary of Family and Christian Names (1857) by William Arthur

Butlin is a name with a curious origin. From the 12th to the 15th century, the powerful Northamptonshire family of Boutevilein or Butevilein held the lordship of Cotesbrook. One of the earliest mentioned members of the family is Sir William Boutevilein, the founder of Pipwell Abbey in the reign of Henry II. (Wh.). Butvilleyn and Botevileyn were other early forms of the name. After passing through the shapes of Butvelin and Butellyn, the name appears as Butlin in the 17th century. "Francis Butvelin, alias Butlin," of Hollowell, gent., died in 1680 (Wh.) During the 17th and 18th centuries there were gentle families of Butlin residing at Ravensthorp and Whilton (B.), and the name still occurs in Ravensthorp. The name of Butevileyn also occurred in Somersetshire in the reign of Edward I. (H. R.).
