Budge Surname Meaning
From Where Does The Surname Originate? meaning and history
This surname, now somewhat rare, is recorded in Caithness and in Orkney. In a manuscript "Genealogie of the Lairds of Toftinggall," written about 1700, it is stated that "Whence they came or took their name is unknown for the most part, but by common tradition it is affirmed that they are descended of the family of Macdonald, and that the first of this family that came to Caithness fled thither for slaughter, and changed his name from Macdonald to Budge As the Budges had certainly settled in Caithness towards the end of the fifteenth century, their descent from the Macdonalds, and their connection with the county, through Donald Calloch, are not improbable" (Henderson, Caithness family history, p. 181—182). Hugh Macdonald, the Sleat seanchaidh, in his History of the Macdonalds (HP., I, p. 20), mentions "the Butdkes in Caithness, of whom is the Laird of Tolingail," that is, the Budges of Toftingall. The Rev. John Fraser says that in 1438 there were "continual jarres betuix the Benes (Bayns) and Budges and other clans in Cathnes" (Wardlaw, p. 103). The notarial double of a charter granted by 'Henricus de Sancto Claro, Comes Orchadiae,' to Budge, of tenements in Wick is undated, but a charter granted by one of the two Henrys, earls of Orkney would carry the Budges back to between 1379, the date of creation of the first Henry St. Clair, as earl of Orkney, and 1420 when the second earl of the name died (Henderson, loc. cit.). The first authentic mention of the name, however, is in 1440 when two churchmen of the name appear in record. Magnus Buge appears in that year as canon of Ross, and in 1444 is mentioned as vicar of Tain (Pap. Lett., IX. p. 144,149). The death of a brother of Magnus, Henry Buge, or de Buge, described as treasurer of Ross, took place at about the same time (ibid., p. 431,439, 449). John Budge is recorded in Oxsetter, Shetland, 1615 (Shetland), and Isobel Buge was married in Edinburgh, 1662 (Edinb. Marr.). Budege 1583. Jenner's suggestion (Cornish grammar, p. 198) from Welsh Ap Hodge is unlikely.
(? French) a nickname from the fur so called, which was used particularly to trim scholastic robes; Stiff, Pompous [doubtless a palatal form of Old French boc, (French bouc) a goat, goat-skin] O Foolishness of men! that lend their ears To those budge doctors of the Stoic fur.
Milton, Comus, 706-7.
There lived a family of Budge, at Darley, in Linkinhorne, early in the 17th century (M.); the name is still in the district.
