Buffkin Surname Meaning

User-submitted Reference

Origin of the family name appears to come from Belgium. Llewellen Boveken is listed in the ancient Kent history as having come to England from Belgium and was granted land at Leeds in Kent by Henry VIII. Leeds Chapel bears the crest of Bufkyn. The sound of the name has remained constant though the spelling has changed based on how the writer of the time felt appropriate. Some family research suggests the Belgium town of Beauvechain, home to a NATO air base today, is the root of the name. Others choose the ancient Norman, Boveken, as the correct root; the meaning of which may be "(a)bove ken", or higher knowledge or understanding. The less interpretive meaning may be used, "kin of the buffalo", which has some base appeal. The name appears often in the History of Kent and is described therein as an ancient family of the region, marrying into the royal lines and serving Henry, Edward , and Elizabeth in the 1500-1600s in the royal court. Emigration to the Americas is shown as arriving in Virginia (Isle of Wight) and Carolina (Georgetown) in the mid 1600's during the turmoil of the Court of that time.
