From the old place of Bullerwell in the parish of Hobkirk, Roxburghshire. Mention is made in 1489 of the land of vmqwliill George BuIlirwell in Dunfermline (DBR., 306), and in 1491 Alison Bullirwel resigned a land lying in the Nethirton (ibid., 315). Jhone Androsone was admitted burgess of Dunfermline "throw resone of his wyf Alesone Bowlyrwell" in 1492 (ibid., 39), and Sir John Bullerwale was curate of the church of Arryngrosk in 1527 (Cambus., 22). Six individuals of this name are recorded in the Edinburgh Marriage Register from 1613. James Bullarwall appears as burgess of Selkirk in 1662, and William Bullerwall was burgess of Jedburgh in 1663 (RRM., III, p. 63, 70). Mr. James Bullerwall was schoolmaster at Duns in Berwickshire in 1699 (Lauder), Alexander Buleruall in Tolbooth Kirk parish signed the Test, 1685 (RPC., 3. ser. X, p. 456), and George Bullenwell was deacon of shoemakers in Jedburgh, 1756 (Heirs, 285).
