There is a Bullions near Larbert, Stirlingshire, another near Cairneyhill, Dunfermline, and a third near Nemphlar in Lanarkshire. In the parish of Ecclesmachen in West Lothian there is also a mineral spring named Bullion Well (Penny, Linlithgowshire, p. 18). These place names are derived from Gaelic (Irish) bullan, defined by Joyce as "a round spring well in a rock or rocks. Often applied to an artificial cuplike hollow in a rock which generally contains rain water" (Irish names of places, III, p. 152). The -s is English plural. Andrew Bulzeons made a renunciation of the third part of the lands of Little Tullibeltane in 1674 (DPD., II, p. 160).
Probably local, from Bolleyne, a town in France, whence the family of Anne Boleyne took their name; or from the city of Boulogne, which was so called from Beul, Gaelic, the mouth, and Liane, the river, or the "mouth of Liane,"it being situated at the mouth of that river.
