A Dictionary of English and Welsh Surnames (1896) by Charles Wareing Endell Bardsley

This surname is rare in the north, but was fairly common in the shires of Peebles, Haddington, Linlithgow, and Dumbarton. The name was probably introduced from England, and in the fourteenth century there was "a family of sailors of the name trading between English and Scottish ports" (SHR., II, p. 191). The earliest of the name recorded in Scotland appears to be Adam Bulloc who witnessed an agreement between the abbot and monks of Newbattle and Alexander de Drochyl regarding the marches of Kingside, c. 1250 (Neubotle, p. 27). Richard Bullok was slain in the field of Cambok, 1278 (Bain, II, p. 34). Walter Bulloc was juror on an inquest which found that Robert de Pinkeny held the tenement of Balincref in 1296 (ibid., II, 857). William Bulloc was attorney for the provost of Haddington, 1329 (ER., I, p. 164). Another William Bullok, "an ecclesiastic of obscure birth but great military talent was prominent in the early part of the reign of David 11, but eventually falling under suspicion was confined in a squalid dungeon in Lochindorb Castle to die of cold and hunger" (ER., I, pref. p. clv), in 1346. Robert Bullock, custumar of Aberdeen, 1358—70 (ER., II) may be the Robert Bullok who witnessed a deed of sale, 1383 (REA., 11. p. 284). William Bullok, bailie of Peebles, 1444, appears four years later as William Bullo (Peebles, 12, 14). John Bullok, merchant and shipmaster of Aberdeen, is in record 1446—54 (Bain, IV, 1194, 1265), and David Bullok was a chaplain in the Abbey of Arnbroath, 1464 (RAA. II, p. 142). Wiliam Bullow was an apprentice in Edinburgh, 1692 (Edin. App.). Bullo or Bullock was the name of an old family in Peeblesshire who were in possession of the lands of Bullo "vulgo nuncupates Bonningtoun-Bullo" in the sixteenth century (Retours, Peebles, 3). This surname has nothing to do with Bulloch, a name of quite different origin.
