From the lands of that name in the Merse. Adam de Bonekil witnessed a charter by Richard Cumyn granting the church of Lyntun roderic to Kelso c. 1160 (Kelso, 274). In 1212 Ranulf de Bonekil was excused from an assize and suits in Cumberland while in the service of the king of Scotland (Bain, I, 542). Sir Ranulf de Bonkill was present in curia regis at Roxburgh in 1231 (APS., I, p. 408). Four individuals of this name rendered homage in 1296: Johan de Bonekil, Thomas Bonequil, Anneys de Bonkhille, all three of the county of Berewyke, and Alisaundre de Bonkhille of the county of Edinburgh (Bain, II, p. 198,206, 207,214). The seal of Thomas is a gem, lion's head in profile, open jawed, S' Thome de Bonkil cleric (ibid., p. 540), and that of Alisaundre de Bonkhille bears three buckles, shield on a tree of three branches, between two wyverns, S' Atexand' de Bonkil (Macdonald, 196). James of Boncle was elected bailie of Edinburgh in 1403 (EBR., p. 2), and Adam de Bonkle was burgess there in 1423 (Egidii, p. 45). Alexander Boncle held land in Edinburgh in 1467 (Neubotle, 299), Robert Bonkill was bailie of Perth in 1514 (OPS., II, p. 662), Sir Eduard de Bouncle was first provost of Trinity College Church in Edinburgh in 1464 (Macdonald, 201), and Thomas Bawnikill is recorded as a 'wadsett haver' in 1630 (LIM., p. 107). The portrait of Sir Edward Buncle, provost of Collegiate Church of Edinburgh appears on the Trinity Screen in Holyrood Palace.
