The "Bundschuh" was the symbol of the uprising peasants in Southern Germany in the Middle Ages. they fought against the noble people and their oppression and, as they had no flags or coat of arms, they put an image of the boots, "shoes to be tied with laces", on their flags. They were, certainly, badly beaten by the noble families and their soldiers and some of them fled to the Alps to escape revenge, which is why you can find quite some of them in the Austrian mountains including a little town called Bundschuh.
