Bunyon Surname Meaning
From Where Does The Surname Originate? meaning and history
Nick 'Bon-jean'; in English Goodjohn. (a) Bapt.; v. Benyon or Onion. I wrote a series of articles some years ago entitled the 'Romance of the London Directory,' afterwards printed in book form. I stated that Bunyan was Bonjean, and that when we talked of' Good John Bunyan' we simply said 'Good John' twice over. This, I believe, was incorporated in a recent life of the great dreamer. But writing more soberly now, and after more study, I feel fairly confident that Bunyan's ancestry was Welsh. The great personal name of Enion or Eignon has left a very varied number of Welsh surnames, for 'Ab-Enion,' as Benyon (qv.) will show, played freely with the vowels. Still Bonjean is not impossible.
1624. John Oliver and Ann Bunnyon: Marriage Lic. (London).
1640. Robert Bunyon and Margaret Baynes: ibid.
— Married — Mathew Bunnyon and Frances Rawlyns: St. Peter, Cornhill.
1677. Baptised — John, son of Rowland Bunnion: St. James, Clerkenwell.
For Benyon = Bennion, q.v.
Hardly the Old French buignon, from Old Frenchbuigne, O.H.Ger. bungo, a lump.
Nomen venerabile! Although associated in sound with that pedal excrescence, a biinnion,-so calculated to hinder the Progress of a Pilgrim !-this surname is in reality derived from the Welsh Ab Enion, the son of Enion, a personal name. So Bevan from Ab Evan, Bithell from Ab Ithell, &c. From Benyon to Bunyan, the transition is easy and natural. The Bunyans were a Gipsy race.
(Welsh, Celtic, and Gaelic.) From Bunan, a squat, short person.
From the French, Bonjean; orfrom the Flemish, Bonichon, Bonnewyn, Bundgen; a personal name.
