An Orcadian surname probably derived from Burgar in Evie-Rendall parish, Orkney Mawnis Burowgar who was tacksman of part of the urislands of Marwick in 1492 (REO., p. 406), is doubtless the Magnus Bursar tacksman of Netherskaile, Marwicfe, in 1503 (ibid., p. 417). Christopher Burgar and Brandam Burgar were witnesses in 1534 (ibid., p. 217), and James Burgar in Colvasetter, Yell, is recorded in 1627 (Shetland). The surname has now been merged in Burgess. Recorded as Burgher in Inverness, 1942.
