A Dictionary of English and Welsh Surnames (1896) by Charles Wareing Endell Bardsley

This surname is said to occur in England in early times, but the Scottish Burness is most probably of local origin. Burneshead, Cumberland, was the seat of a family of Burnes up to the reign of Edward I (Burn, Cumberland, London, 1777, I, p. 124). Bernes in the parish of Glenbervie before 1329 appears as Bernes and Bernis (RMS., I, App. 11,432, 585). The lands were perhaps those afterwards known as Burnhouse of Kair in the barony of Mondynes and may be the present Burnside of Monboddo (compare Jervise, I, p. 155). A family of the name of Burnes were leaseholders of the lands of Bralinmuir and Bogjordan which form the estate of Inchbreck in the early part of the sixteenth century (ibid.). A Bernys in the barony of Renfrew is mentioned in 1375 (RMS., I, 591) and Bernis in the shire of Dunbertane in 1495 (RMP., p. 405). David Burnis a follower of the earl of Cassilis, was respited for murder, 1520 (RSS., I, 3386), and a later David Burnis was burgess of Ayr, 1587 (Ayr, p. 115). Robert Burns's right name was Burness (pron. Bur'ness not Burness'), but because the name was pronounced in Ayrshire as if written Burns, he and his brother Gilbert agreed to drop Burness and assume Burns in April 1786 (Wallace-Chambers, I, p. 318). Burnace, Burnasse, Burnice.

The Surnames of Scotland (1946) by George Fraser Black (1866-1948)

Local. A burn, in Scotland, is a small stream, the same as Bourne. Biorn, in the Danish and Swedish, signifies a bear, figuratively, a ferocious, valiant man.
