From Where Does The Surname Originate? meaning and history

BURNEVILLE: From Burneville in the department of Eure, Normandy. Robert de Burnetuilla was a witness to Earl David's charter founding the Abbey of Selkirk, c. 1120 (Kelso, p. 4). (This it may be noted is the only instance in which the letter t appears in the name.) As Robert de Burneuilla, he was one of the inquest on the lands belonging to the see of Glasgow, c. 1124 (REG., p. 5), and was also a witness to King David's great charter to the Abbey of Holyrood, c. 1128 (LSC., p. 6). He was also witness to David's confirmation of the rights of the abbot of Holyrood in Heret (Airth), c. 1130 (ibid., p. 8), and to the same king's charter of the church of S. Mary at Berwick to the monks of S. Cuthbert, c. 1130—33 (Raine, 18). Another Robert de Burnevilla was one of the hostages for King William the Lion, 1174 (Annals, p. 194). A third Robert de Burneuill filius Matildis filie Geroldi de Thanu granted a tenement in Brockesmude (Broxmouth) to the Abbey of Kelso between 1200—14 (Kelso, 323). He may be the Robert de Borneuill, vicecomes de Berewic, c. 1190—1200 (Home, 224), and witness to charter of a third pan of Lambertun (BNCH., XVI, p. 332). Adam de Berneuile witnessed a charter by Roger, rector of the church of Ellesdene, 1228 (Kelso, 530). Robert de Burnaville and his son, also named Robert, witness a charter by Patrick, earl of Dunbar before 1233 (Raine, 116). Robert de Burneuile appears as witness in Lammermuir c. 1270 (May, 23), In-lands in the counties of Edinburgh, Berwick, and Roxburgh were restored to Agnes, widow of John de Burneville, who had died about twenty years before, William de Burneton (probably the equivalent of Burnevilla) was mayor of Berwick-on-Tweed, 1333—36. It is probable that the Burnfields, which see, a one-time numerous family or clan in the Merse, were descended from the de Burnevilles.
