From Where Does The Surname Originate? meaning and history
A family of this name were in the fifteenth century vassals of the bishop of Glasgow, and in the following century were a numerous clan in the Merse. It is probable that they were an offshoot from the family of De Burneville, which see. Members of the family were cited in 1566 for renewing their feud with the Haitlies (RPC., I, p. 451), and in April 1568 the Brunfields or Brownfields bound themselves and their servants under penalty of £1000 Scots, and assured Alexander Hately in Lembden, John in Broomhill, George in Hardlaw, Lawrence in Haliburton, and Leonard, brothers, and Patrick Hately in the Kleyis, their children, household, men, and servants, that they shall be unharmed and unmolested for three years. In 1571 there was a renewal of the feud between William Burnfield of Grenelawdene and his kin and the Haitlies in which Steven Burnfield was killed (RHM., I, p. 69—70).
