Of local origin from one or more of the ten or a dozen small places of the name. There are villages named Burnside in the shires of Fife, Nairn, and Kincardine. John Burnesyid was a charter witness in Brechin in 1511 (REB., II, 166), and six of the name are recorded in the Edinburgh Marriage Register. John Burnesyde was member of Scots parliament for Culross, 1650 (Hanna, II, p. 485). Janet Burnsyde recorded in Larbert in 1669 (Stirling) may have derived her name from Burnside in the parish of St. Ninians, Stirlingshire. Jennit Burnsyde raised an action in the baron court of Corsehill in 1673 (Corsehill, p. 110). Burnesyde 1512.
