This name, well known in Co. Cork, is very rarely met with elsewhere. It is of Cromwellian origin in Ireland. In the so called census of 1659 four Busteeds are recorded as tituladoes, one in the city and three in the county of Cork. At least twelve Cork wills are listed for the name between 1666 and 1793 and a Cork man Jephson Busteed (born 1678), recorder of Kinsale and M.P. for Midleton etc., was closely related to the powerful family of Jephson of Mallow Castle. Modern birth registrations indicate that, while the name is not numerous, it still, as formerly, belongs almost exclusively to Co. Cork. The marriage licence bonds for the diocese of Cork and Ross include no less than 41 Busteeds between the years 1682 and 1750.
This name is almost peculiar to Co. Cork where it has been since the first half of the seventeenth century. SIF 26
