Local 'of Bossall,' a parish in the North Riding of Yorkshire This seems to have made little impression upon the directories, (a) Bapt. 'the son of Bussell,' undoubtedly a fontal name that made itself felt throughout South England from East to West, and was not unknown in the North.

This surname is derived from a geographical locality. 'de Bosville,' 'a village of 1400 inhabitants, near Yvetot, in Normandy. The family were in England in 1136, and probably from the period of the Conquest' (Lower's Patr. Brit). This is the true parentage of Boswell, although it has such an English local look.

Originally De Bosevil, (H.R.)-of Norman extraction. They migrated from England to Scotland in the reign of David I.

A Norman family who supplied the affix of Newton-Bushell, co. Devon.

Local: from bosch, a wood, and vlle, a village. The family was established in Scotland, temp. David I.

Buswell is now a Clipston name, and it was the name of an old and distinguished Clipston family during the 17th and 18th centuries (Wh.). Sir George Buswell of Clipston was created a baronet in 1660 (B.). The Buswells of Westcot Barton, Oxon, were an important family last century (Wing's "Westcot Barton").

Bushell is a name now scantily represented in the county. Two hundred years ago there was a Bath family of this name, members of which, on various occasions, filled the office of mayor (Warner's "Bath"). The name is still in that city.
