An Anglicized form of French Bouchard. A family or families of this name appear as tenants on lands of the Abbey of Cupar-Angus in the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries. William Bowchard had a tack of part of the Grange of Kyncreff in 1450 (Cupar-Angus, I, p. 122) In later entries his name appears as Bowehart (for Bowchart 1458), Bouchard, Bouchart and Buschart (1554). David Buchart or Buchert, mason's laborer at Dunkeld, 1512 (Rent. Dunk., p. 125,131). John Buchart is mentioned in the will of Sir Thomas Maule of Panmure, 1513 (Panmure, II, 285). James Buchart, admitted burgess of Dundee, 1608. Nine of the name are recorded in the Edinburgh Marriage Register with spellings Bouchart, Boutcher, Boutchert, Butchard, and Butchart; and there are twelve of the name recorded in Brechin Commissariot Record. There is a Butcharts-land in Forfar Retours (425). Busch art or Buchat (1549) also appears as a misspelling of Wishart.
