One of the earliest mentioned members of the family is Sir William Boutevilein, the founder of Pipwell Abbey in the reign of Henry II. (Wh.). "Francis Butvelin, alias Butlin," of Hollowell, gent., died in 1680 (Wh.) During the 17th and 18th centuries there were gentle families of Butlin residing at Ravensthorp and Whilton (B.), and the name still occurs in Ravensthorp.
