From Where Does The Surname Originate? meaning and history
This surname, which is confined mainly to eastern Perthshire and the adjoining part of Fife, is a softened form of Buttergask, now the name of a village in the parish of Ardoch, Perthshire. Reginald de Buthyrgasse witnessed a Maule charter of 1261 (Panmure, II, 85). Johan de Botirgask, one of the king's tenants in Perthshire, rendered homage in 1296 (Bain, II, p. 202), and in the same year Walter de Bothergask was among the Scottish prisoners taken in the capture of Dunbar Castle (ibid., II, 742,873). A Butergask de eodem is referred to in 1445 (SCM., V, p. 283), and in 1458 mention is made of the land of John de Buthergask de eodem in Dundee (REB., I, p. 185,190). Margaret Buttirgask de eodem resigned the lands of Buttirgask in the sheriffdom of Perth in 1507 (RMS., 3100), and Patrick Butergask, vicar of Cortoquhy, was a charter witness in 1514 (Illus, II, p. 45).
