The surname Butterly originates from the misspelling of the surname Bouteiller, which is found in northern France, Bordeaux and the Channel Isles. The Butterly family predominantly in Ireland were Huguenot (French) silk weavers. The Huguenot exodus from France occurred during the French wars of religion (1572 Massacre of St Bartholomew). There are old variants of the name spelling in Derby, Hampshire and Devon, Cornwall.
